I spoke with Eric Kvames at the Oldway Art Center, the other day. If you have never been there, its a fascinating place. Right across from Mountainside Market, on 211, there's that suspension footbridge over the Thornton River.
Beyond the bridge is a kind of haven for professional artists. Mr. Kvames himself is a master glassblower, and produces art glass, ranging from elegant bowls, ornate paperweights and such, on through marbles, brightly colored hand- blown Christmas tree balls, suncatcher window ornaments and decorative beads.
He is the proprietor and mastermind behind Oldway, ■but the place is a community. There are not too many places outside of universities where so much artistic talent is gathered in one place.
We are fortunate indeed that they have gathered here, in our out of the way comer of the woods.
Among the artisans and artists working out of Oldway, there are people who work in sculpture, metal working, stained glass, woodworking, painting, ceramics, web design, and a resident naturalist. It has existed as an artist s enclave for a number of years, but the gallery, you may recall, opened up about two years ago.
The gallery- the big shop right behind their trademark bridge, houses Mr. Kvames' work, along with an array of fine original sculpture, ceramics and other artwork. If you are looking for a one of a kind gift for a friend- something nice and unusual, its an excellent spot.
