have amazing capabilities. If you count all the studios, ‘as far as glass and wood and metal and fine sculpture, we have a lot of capabilities. Everyone here is basically a helpful person. We don't have any crotchety old artists here that are hard to get along with- except me of course. I like that about the place. All this came about because of my association with so many other artists throughout my career. There is a real great comradery among artists in the first place. Its a big place here. My business didn't need all this space.
More than that I wanted to make a community, and have it evolve essentially into what it has evolved into, which is a situation where we can all help each other out. There is a lot of strength in a group. When Pete Estes originally was talking about selling me the junkyard that was immediately what came to mind. A community that's loosely strung together but held together by the strength of each individual, and their helpful natures. We have no swell-headed artists.
People who have ego problems can just stay in the city."
I spoke with some of the other artists in residence, and they echoed identical sentiments about the benefits of being close together. It seems to be something that works.
