to more than 500 acres and now, through proceeds from the plate, hopes grow for an even bigger bloom. After the first 1,000 plates are purchased, $15 from each additional plate will go for extra seed stock, special plantings and an expanded marketing effort.
The flowers blooming on the plate, blackeyed Susan's, blue bells and butterfly weed are all Virginia natives that appear along the highway. The choice of flowers and the plate's design was a joint effort between the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and VDOT, the latest a partnership that started with the creation of Operation Wildflower.
Before plates are available at Department of Motor Vehicle customer service centers, 350 pre-paid applicants must order the license plate. Those interested can mail the application and a check for $25 (or $35 for a personalized plate) to: VDOT Environmental Division, Wildflower Specialty License Plate, 1401 E. Broad St., Richmond, Va 23219. Applications can be obtained by calling (804) 371-6825 or by visiting VDOT's web site and printing the form.
