plants have the word "wort" attached to them. "Wort" is an Anglo-Saxon name for plant; consequently, that familiar wildflower called birthwort was interpreted as being a medical aid to women in childbirth.
Chicory has a deep taproot. So far into the earth does this root penetrate that mowing along roadsides does nothing to hamper the plant except limit its growth to a few inches. This is why roadsides in early morning appear blanketed” by the bluest of all blues.
When not mowed, chicory can reach a height of 3 feet. It competes for our attention along roadways with the filmy white of Queen Anne’s lace and the pink globes of clover. Chicory is one invasive alien I am happy to welcome.
