I have lived in Rappahannock County only three years and
have taken the Rappahannock News for a considerably shorter length of time. Therefore, it is as a newcomer- perhaps even as an outsider- that I must express my perplexity at your attacks on Walter Longyear in the July 26 edition. I call them attacks because, in my ignorance of what has gone on before in county politics, that is what they appear to me.
It seems that Mr. Longyear issued an analysis of a report required by the Virginia Board of Elections. That analysis, unsurprisingly, placed his candidacy in a favorable light. You respond with a front page story which puts a distinctly favorable spin on his opponent's numbers and an editorial accusing Mr. Longyear of "pre-emptive strikes."
