YOUNG AT HEART
If you are looking for guidance regarding a preschooler’s response to the illness and/or death of a parent, there is evidence to show that children between ages 3 and 5 years have little understanding of the irreversibility of death. Even when they are told about impending death ahead of time, they are still likely to ask when the deceased will return, for weeks or months after the death. Once young children receive a concrete explanation of death, they are likely to display signs of grieving. Young children are also easily overwhelmed by the intense emotional reactions of the remaining parent. With all this in mind, we should remain attentive to the emotional needs of young children who are grieving.
While young children may not understand the finality of death, it’s clear they do understand the pain their caregivers suffer. Taking care of their worry is hard, but essential, if we wish to allay their fears. At the Moser Funeral Home, we’re here with a helping hand when your family has suffered the loss of one you love. We’re at 233 Broadview Avenue, Warrenton. For answers to your questions, call 540-347-3431. “One often calms one s grief by recounting it. ”
