Their joy was probably greater, as these ancestorsunlike the author- weren't plump from Pringles, pizza and cheeseburgers. They may have really needed the berries.
Right now- especially at higher elevations, wild blueberries, and their smaller close relatives, the huckleberries or whortleberries are ripe. Lots of trails in the area pass by hundreds of the bushes. Up on Old Rag are some, and Jennifer Glenn at the library tells me there are some up Little Devil Staircase as well.
