Location & Design Section

Designs routine to moderately complex highway improvement projects by using CADD. Reviews roadway designs & produces complete plans. Reviews work of others & calculates quantities & develops accurate construction cost estimates. Uses computers, calculators, aerial photographs, topographical maps, & road & bridge standards in the design of improvement projects. Conducts on-site visits to ensure conformity with plans & represents the Department at project showings & pre-construction meetings. Must have knowledge of roadway design, highway construction &'surveying. Must have knowledge & skill in CADD & drafting methods & plan preparation procedures. Demonstrated ability to interpret & apply standard engineering & Department’s specifications, standards & policies. Must be skilled in performing complex mathematical calculations including trigonometry. Coursework in math, mechanical drawing, & civil engineering desirable. Salary: $25,881 - $40,406.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN VII #06121

Location & Design Section

Assists the Survey Engineer by resolving survey related construction problems; coordinates with inspection personnel &/or contractors, and monitors contractor compliance. Coordinates & supervises existing survey technician staff in construction stakeouts of roads, bridges & large drainage structures. Handles & coordinates design/survey functions in preparation for pre-construction conferences; review plan assembly of computer stakeout reports & survey functions in preparation for pre-construction conferences; review plan assembly of computer stakeout reports & survey reference data for completeness & accuracy prior to submission to the contractor, attend scoping meetings, perform regular field inspections & attend conferences. Provides training in construction surveying & use of computer output listings to VDOT employees & contractors as needed. Manages the survey location of drainfields & collaborates to resolve any issues that arise. Performs other survey duties as needed. Must have a through knowledge of highway construction/survey techniques &expertise in highway design standards & applications. Skilled in the use of computers, including CADD. Ability to manage complex survey projects; work with & supervise others; monitor contractors; analyze situations & develop collaborative resolution; provide training; read & interpret highway plans & survey documents. A VA Land Surveyor’s License or SIT certification is desirable. Salary: $33,811 - $52,787

Produces SAAP & No-plan assemblies & coordinates work with other personnel. Reviews roadway & produces complete plans. Reviews work of others & calculates/checks quantities & vouchers & develops accurate construction cost estimates. Uses computers, calculators, aerial photographs, topographical maps & road & bridge standards in the design of improvements projects. Conducts on-site visits to ensure conformity with plans & represents the Department at project showings & pre-construction meetings. Must have knowledge of roadway design, highway construction & surveying. Must have knowledge & skill in CADD & drafting methods & plan preparation procedures. Knowledge of Department’s SAAP, no-plan & final audit processes desirable. Demonstrated ability to interpret & apply standard engineering & Department’s specifications, standards & policies. Must be skilled in performing complex mathematical calculations including trigonometry. Coursework in math, mechanical drawing & civil engineering desirable. Salary: $25,881 - $40,406.
