Athletic Director Jon Smythe referred to founding chairman Paul Gall as a "big heart guy —and conveyed his regret that Paul could not attend. He said that Paul believes strongly in the value of athletics, and he added that I believe that you're getting half an education without sports. Mr. Smythe related the results of his review of Rappahannock s athletic programs: I opened all the boxes, looked in all the drawers—we've got room for improvement here ... to get to where we want to be . . . where we can he.

He said that the poor state of Rappahannock athletics was not a criticism of our kids, but that the system was not competitive, and that the facilities "are not what other teams have.’
