lrinchera is the largest remaining piece of the original Sangre de Cristo Spanish Land Grant.
The artists were free to explore and work anywhere on the ranch and had experienced guides to take them to the most remote parts of the ranch. There were no formal critiques or instructional sessions and the participants were simply free to paint and work all day.
In Colorado, "frustration and adjustment characterized my first days of painting," confessed Wilson. "Initially, I had a very hard time isolating things and adjusting to the light and high key color. The scale of the landscape is quite different in the west, it is vast and open." Wilson characteristically makes extensive sketches and compositional studies of his subjects before painting.
Wilson had three months to develop finished paintings for an article in Watercolor Magazine and an exhibition at the Forbes Galleries in New York. The exhibition which features 55 works all done in waterbased media, capture the beauty and landscape of the ranch, including its three 14,000-foot mountain peaks, numerous lakes, and 40 miles of streams.
