Endorsements
George Allen
We've had visits from both U. S. Sen. Chuck Robb and his challenger, George Allen, and both have professed an understanding of what is important to Rappahannock County and an appreciation of what makes our community unique.
However, we feel that former Virginia Governor Allen has a stronger message, backed up with solid achievements in areas that are important to us.
First, we agree with Mr. Allen’s belief that the less impact government has on our lives, the better off we are. We also like the fact that he is committed to programs giving tax relief to working families and reduce public welfare — two things he accomplished for Virginia —- for which he would work as a U. S. Senator.
We also feel that his public safety initiatives, in particular his elimination of parole and Project Exile, which further punishes those convicted of using a firearm while committing a felony, were good legislation.
The effort to bring new, high technology jobs to Virginia really got moving while Mr. Allen was governor, and although this “revolution” hasn't made a big impact on Rappahannock yet, the number of small Internet-based companies and telecommuters within our borders is increasing every year.
We think it's time for a man of George Allen's vision and energy to go to Washington to represent us.
Frank Wolf
A more familiar face in Rappahannock, Frank Wolf, our 10th District Representative in the U. S. House, has done a good job for us. We re pleased with his openness and accessibility, and the way he keeps in touch.
Rep. Wolf has been effective in bringing legislation to the floor dealing with education, including sponsoring federal block grants, increased funding for higher education and smaller class size.
Rep. Wolf has worked to see that Virginia gets its share of federal transportation funding for needed highway projects. He has promoted the more realistic use of HOV lanes on regional highways and other measures that have helped the growing number of commuters that live in Rappahannock. In addition, he has championed "telecommuting" and tax credits for companies that promote such traffic-reducing employee arrangements.
Rep. Wolf has managed to accomplish much because of his bipartisan approach to legislation, which puts the public good ahead of politics.
Once again, Frank Wolf is the clear choice for 10th District representative.
