Mr. Smythe spoke of his enthusiasm and motivation to succeed in the task of improving the athletic programs, and of the value of athletics to the students and to the community.
He told the audience of the need to get more students involved in sports, and told of conversations with Rappahannock kids who said that they could not play because they had to work. He said that he spoke to a group of adults after that, and told them to let them play a sport. They're gonna work their whole lives.
A few days later, he said, one of those working students came to him and asked which sport he should go out for — his father had told him that he did not have to work any more.
