Can you believe there was a time in this country when a person’s word was more binding than a contract? When a handshake could ensure a lasting agreement, like a marriage used to be? The Ten Commandments were not honored just because they had once been carved in stone but because they made sense in human relationships. Thou shalt not bear false witness" is not politically correct today. Slick politicians have invented "spin", the cynical technique to determine which lie will fly, today.
There is error in relegating "greatness" to the past. Perhaps the greatest generation is yet to be born, if society can be guided to encourage and protect it and if God is still willing to help us. "Ask and ye shall receive", it's worth a try.
A phrase kept coming to my mind. I couldn't identify it's source. "These are the times that try men’s souls." I researched it and discovered that the father of our country during the darkest days of the American Revolution asked Tom Payne to "write something, not only for the army but for the whole country, we re so near to the end." Tom Payne wrote these famous lines, so timely yet today.
"—These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will shrink from the service of their country but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered."
When we've all made our best possible choices on election day let us agree to do only those things that will bring about a greater generation in the future.
