some of C.B. Wood's Albemarle Pippins, it is said, found their way to the table of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. The passage of hours was actually recorded, with surprising accuracy on the floor of a sunny room. And during the Civil War, Rappahannock County's resourceful women dismantled smokehouse floors and walls, soaking the planks in water to extract the salt for preserving hams that would nourish their families over the winter.
But there was no single defining moment, nor was there any one factor that has charted the course of Rappahannock County. Rather, a series of natural disadvantages to growth has prevailed down through the years, aided by several manmade obstacles set in place during the earlier part of the twentieth century.
A Ramble through Rappahannock chronicles the county's evolution from agricultural backwater at its founding in 1656 to eclectic arts enclave and affluent retirement community today. It is a story worth telling-and retellingbecause it reminds us of the value in our heritage and of the importance of embracing our role in conserving for future generations Rappahannock County's natural resburces and historic traditions.
