schools were the same as they were thirty years ago. First of all, we would have no computers in any of our classrooms.
Sure typewriters were great back then, but advancements have since made them obsolete. Should we also remove all color televisions and VCRs from the classrooms? Those weren’t there either. More directly related to the athletic department, should we remove the weight room and wrestling room? Better yet what about the gym, which was added on in the 1990’s?
I am unaware of any major technological innovations in the field of basketball that would make this gym necessary. I am however aware that paved and rubberized tracks provide significantly faster times and fewer injuries than dirt paths.
There is no reason that all other teams have had their facilities improved while the track team has been left behind in the Athletic Stone Age. Furthermore, why are new teams being added when ones already in existence have such awfiil equipment that they can’t even host meets at their own school?
Don’t get me wrong though, I am not a silly idealist and I know that money for such projects does not grow on trees. Furthermore I realize that with the constraints of recent budgets cuts it would be difficult, if not impossible to begin such a project. However if money can be found time and again to create new teams it should also be available to those teams already in existence.
I love football as much as the next person but before $75,000 is spent on the creation of a new team, the track team should receive the equipment and facilities they need.
