HI tell you, folks, this story has more twists and turns than Chubby Checker in a blender. Maybe a little history is in order. Pi Day, celebrated in March, the third month, on the 14th day, at 1:59 p.m:, or 3.14159, has put Rappahannock County on the map. Why?
Because Rappahannock County was the first county in the United States to celebrate Pi Day. This county has been secretly celebrating it for about 120 years.
The Pi Day story first surfaced for public view in this county a few years ago. Here is the legend. Back on March 14, 1882, a farmer named Waldo, in Old Waldo Hollow, tried whispering into the ear of his rightmost mule to get his team started on spring plowing. Nothing else was working. At exactly 1:59 p.m. that day, he whispered the number 3.14159. The mules snapped to, started to plow an ever-expanding circle in Waldo’s field, and they worked unceasingly until the team had finished the plowing by sundowm. Waldo celebrated by purchasing some new plow points at the Comer Store in Sperryville.
