1 he boys wore a harp badge, while the girls wore green ribbons in their hair. This tradition came into effect in the late 1900’s. In America, Saint Patrick's Day is basically a time to wear green and party. The first American celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day was in 1737 in Boston, Mass. Today, the largest parades are held in New York City.

Green Beer, as we know it today was derived from the old custom of “Drowning the Shamrock”. After the parades the men would gather at the local pubs. A shamrock was dropped into their drink and they drank it including the shamrock.

Mv family heritage is from Ireland. Our family name was O’Dwyer, and like many, the O’ was dropped leaving just the Dwyer.

We were told by our parents, there were three brothers who came together to America. They were from Tipperary. We were not interested enough at that time to ask questions, so all the information we could have received is gone.

Knowing your heritage is an important part of who you are. Take the time to listen, ask questions, and take notes when your Mom and Dad are not available to find out these things. Much information is gone when you lose yout elders. There are many questions we regret we never asked.
