I’ve got the proverbial two chances of winning, slim and none. If I don’t run, I have no chance, and a whole lot of Virginians will be disenfranchised.
When I was growing up in Virginia in the 1940’s and 1950’s, the joke was that we had a two party system here, the “Democrats who were in and the Democrats who were out.” It was not a healthy system, but the current Republican juggernaut would seemingly have it the same way.
“Power corrupts,” Lord Acton famously intoned, “and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
So count me in. I figure if I run, the system works, everyone has a choice, and in that sense, everyone wins. All I have to lose is a lot of sleep and probably a bit of dignity. But that all comes back. Like Michael Jordan, I think I left some of my game on the court. And like Michael, I’m older, slower, wiser, more mellow, more conservative, and my knees hurt. But I still have a passion for the game. And I am going to play it to win.
When the press reported that I was weighing the idea of this race, a strange thing happened. Mr. Cantor’s spin doctors went into paroxysms of excessive attack rhetoric, accusing me of being a “Hollywood liberal” who runs “brutal, nasty, negative, and intensely personal” campaigns.
