Director Phil Irwin granted the first easement in the county and Mr. Dennis was the second grantor in 1977.
Some ninety landowners have followed this example during the ensuing years.
Landowners choose open space easements for many reasons with the most prominent being... “to assure that their land will remain as they have known it.” An open space easement protects the natural qualities of the land and can restrict development and mining as determined by the landowner and a public trust entity such as the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) which holds most of the easements in the county.
Furthermore, qualified open space easements could reduce a landowner’s federal estate tax and federal income tax.
