the funds it needs to be done, not just for the team but also for the community at large. PE classes could use the track to run laps and the government mandated mile test. Other sports teams could also use it for running laps during practices. Furthermore it could benefit other members of the community and could become a gathering place for runners and walkers.

A proper track would be something that could benefit all community members regardless of age or gender.

The benefits of running are more than just a healthy body; they also include a healthy mind. Regular exercise greatly decreases anxiety and stress. In addition to this, Runners World Magazine presented the findings of a Canadian study in their February 2002 issue. This study concluded that participants w ho ran for a half an hour prior to taking a test did significantly better than those who did run beforehand.

Now all that needs to be done is raising the money. There are numerous ways of accomplishing this. First perhaps the school could set aside some funds. If this is not possible then perhaps fund raisers could come in handy. The team could have a good old fashioned bake sale but with a healthy twist. Or perhaps they could sell healthy fruit smoothies on the Fourth of July. (The health food twist on all these things since the track would help contribute to a healthy lifestyle.) Maybe instead of selling candy bars they could sell granola bars or something similar.

What about a 5K? On average these events bring in $15 to $20 per participant and include a hundred or more people. Or, since there are other non-running events involved in the sport there could be a jump for
