really need a challenge. (If you are interested, the “brutal, etc." campaign was one that was waged against me by an indicted incumbent and was much reported in the national news back in 1988. I won in a landslide and he pulled time in the slammer.)

Now, our candidacy faces a mountainous obstacle. But I would remind the naysayers of several things, the most important being that Americans are basically fair, open minded, and don't like being taken for granted. I want to believe that my good reputation (such as it is) can withstand the distortions of the slick slash and burn attacks, which will surely come. And even if, in this case, it doesn't, that will not matter. The Good Lord above is the one who is really keeping score.

I hope to be able to use this space to keep a campaign journal throughout the coming months, and to continue to comment on other topics as well. No consultants, no spokesman, no spin doctors, no television attack ads. I intend to run the last old-fashioned campaign.

Those who say that this is a hopeless quest would do well to read of the ragtag Colonial army at Valley Forge, to think of Stonewall Jackson in the Valley of Virginia, and to gaze upon the flag of the Old Dominion, where Little David stands triumphant over the unbeatable Goliath. Keep in touch, brothers and sisters. I’ll sure need a lot of help. Things are starting to warm up in the Hollow.
