Dr. Gangel said that a possible $370,000 budget shortfall was covered by cutting out nonrecurring expenses, reducing costs as per staff supervisors’ recommendations, eliminating capital projects for the year, and reducing staff by eliminating a maintenance position, an RCES physical education position, and two part-time positions.
The draft budget package provided showed a total of $8,917,209 for the upcoming fiscal year - a 2.04 increase from the current year’s budget of $8,739,229, but final revenue and expenditure figures will likely change that number.
Public input began with comments from former School Board member Ron Makela who prefaced his comments with remarks about his study of the budget over the years since he was first elected to the School Board, and his findings that funds are not always used for the budgeted purposes. He also pointed out that the teacher salary increase of 3.5 percent equates to no increase because of the extended school day, and
