As difficult as it may be to think about dying,
this is National Hospice Month, a time when
hospices around the country, including ours, are making us aware of end-of-life care options and even more to talk and think about death long before it becomes an issue.
And when it becomes an issue, after a loved one has received a terminal diagnosis, the hospice is there to help us prepare for a “good death”, fostering a philosophy that focuses on enjoying time together and achieving personal goals in the time that remains.
The focus is on caring, not curing.
With hospice care, dying patients and their famines are provided with comfort, compassion and dignity at the end of life, regardless of a person’s financial resources and whether they live at home, a nursing home or an assisted living facility. The hospice believes that a person has the right to die free of pain, spending time in familiar surroundings with friends and family.
According to a recent Time/CNN poll, 70 percent of Americans want to die at home. The reality is that 75 percent die in medical institutions.
Our Hospice of the Rapidan, founded in 1983, is headquartered in Culpeper and serves our county and that of Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison and Orange. It provides skilled and compassionate medical care, pain management, social work, and emotional and spiritual support. Bereavement support is extended to patients’ families and those who have lost a loved one. * We salute our hospice and its volunteers for carrying on the vision of Dame Cecily Saunders, founder'of the Hospice movement in England who brought it to qur country. She wrote this poem which has become the hospice motto: « You matter because you are *. You matter to the last moment of your life * And we will do all we can 3 Not only to help you die peacefully i But also to live until you die. *
