run through the summer of 2003. Just last month, Richard Smith, RCPS’ Director of Curriculum and Instruction, presented a draft of new graduation requirements that included a change of the schools’ work release program for junior and seniors into a cooperative work course for school credits.

The new SIP does just what Mr. Smith proposed in his draft and more. It provides summer SOL remediation for those program participants who have not met SOL standards; it provides opportunities for occupationrelated coursework at Lord Fairfax Community College or through distance learning; it provides internships at local businesses; and it offers the opportunity for the assessment of RCPS programs by participating businesses.

The SIP program will be presented to students, parents, business owners and others at a Headwaters' Excellence in Education Forum at the Rappahannock Library on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
