Most residential septic tanks hold 1,000 or 1,500 gallons.
When a toilet is flushed or a shower taken or a load of laundry done, wastewater makes its way to a main line and then to the septic tank.
There it cascades in and separates into three layers: a floating scum made up of light solids such as fats, grease, oils, lint; then heavy solids, which sink to the bottom, and finally liquids, called effluent, in the middle.
