The solids left in the septic tank are periodically pumped out. How often? Culpeper County requires that private septic tanks be pumped out every five years, or whenever a property is sold. Some septic service companies note that if there are three-to-five people in a home, then every 3-5 years is recommended. Two people in a home: every 5-7 years.

Pumping out a septic tank takes only 30-45 minutes, but finding the tank is sometimes a problem, as many people have no idea where theirs is buried.

Septic service companies may use a probe bar to find a tank, or, in tough cases, they might use a small transmitter flushed down the toilet that emits a signal as it travels through to the main line and into the tank.
