ume. Planes of paint and sharp shadows depict distant mountains as chilly reminders of winter’s solitude. Almost in the center of is a small but distinct red building that unifies the entire composition. It is a hauntingly familiar scene for those of us who live in the Blue Ridge.
Williams’ still lifes are also refreshing and direct but more heavily reliant on composition for their success. Rather than capturing the inherent beauty of a natural landscape, these paintings are more about the relationships of color and shape.
The large painting, Sunflower with Green Apples, is a Cezanne-like table top still life, simple in composition but mysterious. The sunflower pitcher is lying on its side with green apples scattered about. It is more than an arrangement of objects as one wonders what just happened. The pitcher isn’t broken but the scattered apples suggest an accident. And a delicate white mass in the foreground suggests a table linen or a flower arrangement that was destroyed. The painting is lovely on the surface but the more you look, the more questions arise. This may be the best painting in the exhibition.
