The Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table opens all its meetings to the public and encourages everyone interested in the Civil War and in our local history to attend. The upcoming meeting is from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Old Sperryville Bookshop, at 44 Main Street, Sperryville.

The Blue Ridge Round Table’s annual dinner, which is on Tuesday, Dec. 3, is also open to the public. This will be a delicious buffet supper at the Public House in Flint Hill from 6 to 9 p.m. The featured end-ofthe-year guest speaker wall be David Welker, who will discuss the pivotal Battle of Chantilly in which Robert E. Lee’s forces were narrowly prevented from achieving a total victory over the retreating Union army at the end of Second Bull Run.
This battle, in which two well regarded Union generals lost their lives on the front lines, is poorly memorialized by a half-acre plot at the Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax.
Welker has recently published a book on the battle, The Tbmpest at Ox Hill: The Battle of Chantilly. He has also written A Keystone Rebel based on a journal of a Pennsylvanian soldier who fought for the Confederacy.
