Alternatives and Feasibility Study for Wastewater Treatment, Town of Washington, Virginia. Resources International recommended that we use a gray water system. This system would only address liquid waste while the solids would be pumped from septic tanks at each building on a scheduled basis, much as is done in Sperryville. Their conclusion was:
Based on the Town’s desire for a system that is relative low tech, easy to operate, has reasonable construction cost, and utilizes septic tanks as part of the treatment process, our conclusion is that a recirculating sand filter with subsurface disposal wall meet all the criteria. The most cost effective collection system is the combination Gravity/Pressure System.
Based on the proposal, several members of the community and Town government made a trip to West Virginia to see a working Recirculating Sand Filter. This was followed by acceptance of the recommended system as the way to go.
When Avon Hall was offered to the Town it appeared to provide a way for the Town to preserve the view as people enter Town, preserve our open spaces, and give us an internal Town site for the installation of the desired recirculating sand filter and subsurface drain field. Our desire was to locate the field entirely behind Avon Hall so that the building and front lawn could be preserved for other purposes. To do this we had to accomplish two things.
