I’ve come to name the houses in which I’ve lived in the country according to the critters that had already laid claim to them before I got there.

In Wyoming, on the ranch where I worked, the first cabin was the Box Elder Beetle Cabin. One pring morning shortly after I'd moved in, I awoke to the walls being black with the rather pretty and innocuous little beetles, which look a bit like fireflies. Wyomingans have a similar relationship with these beetles as we do with the Asian ladvbugs that cover our walls and ceilings at various times of the year.

However, Wyomingans make the best of the situation by holding box elder beetle races at the local bars, which entails more betting and beer drinking than thrilling photo finishes. My next cabin on the ranch was the Fly Cabin, where enough Hies would cover the windows in early fall to almost obliterate w-hat otherwise was a great view* of the Big Horn Mountains.

The variety of fauna sharing my house has expanded since I moved to Rappahannock. In the first
