Holiday season
means more traffic
— buckle up
With the approaching holiday season our
roads will soon be full of drivers destined
for celebrations with family and friends. We can never be reminded too many times to "drive smart, safe and sober." DMV personnel constantly issues press releases encouraging newspapers to stress over and Over to our readers: "observe speed limits, buckle up, keep your cool and don't drink and drive."
This year according to DMV, Virginia State Police and other law enforcement agencies are conducting high visibility safety belt enforcement operations through Thanksgiving weekend as part of the "Buckle Up Now" campaign.
During Virginia’s 2001 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 17 people died in 14 separate traffic crashes. According to DMV the deaths were caused by failure to wear seat belts, alcohol use and speeding. All motorists are encouraged to make sure you and your passengers always wear seat belts; select a designated driver; observe posted speed limits and be alert for increased traffic during the holiday season.
This week Sheriff Larry Sherertz also announced that the Sheriffs Office will be strictly enforcing Virginia’s safety belt and child safety seat laws during November's Operation ABC Mobilization as a statewide effort to boost Virginia's safety belt and child safety belt usage rates.
Sheriff Sherertz said, "Safety belts and child safety seats are the law and we will enforce the law. 'Buckle Up Now' means zero tolerance. Zero tolerance means if we stop you and you're in violation of the safety restraint law, you will receive a ticket. No exceptions and no excuses." We applaud the Sheriff for this approach and encourage parents to make sure their children are buckled safely and securely.
