Headwaters’ first Global Spotlights program, “The Afghanistan That Was,’ attracted a full house to the RCHS band room on the evening of Nov. 7. Students and adults explored a fascinating display of handcrafted Afghan objects, traditional clothing, and jewelry from Jennifer Manly’s collection and rugs loaned by Robert Ballard Fine Arts ol Washington. Green tea and Afghan pastries were provided by the Culinary Arts class.
Following these refreshments, Professor William Bechhoefer of the University of Maryland presented a fascinating illustrated lecture oi his life in Afghanistan in the mid-70’s. Many of his slides featured wonderful examples of Afghan architecture, quite a few of which he suspects are no longer standing. His presentation gave the audience an in-depth look into a culture before it was overtaken by outside forces.
Mr. Bechhoefer and his wife, Sondra, attended an RCHS anthropology class in the afternoon for an informal question and answer session on Afghanistan. Many questions from the students concerned aspects of a woman’s life in such a traditional Islamic society. In response. Mrs. Bechhoefer was able tc relate observations she had made while conducting field research on the subject during the period of their residence in Kabul, thus bringing a personal element to the discussion.
