The Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office will be strictly enforcing Virginia’s safety belt and child safety seat laws during November’s Operation ABC Mobilization as a statewide effort to boost Virginia’s safety belt. and child safety belt usage rates. Recent surveys indicate that only 70.4 percent of Virginians are properly using safety belts and child safety seats. This is a drop of two percentage points from previous state surveys, which translates to 135,000 additional motorist not complying with Virginia occupant protection laws.
“We’re enforcing the law to save lives. The safety belt usage rate in Virginia is headed in the wrong direction, and that is putting lives in jeopardy,” said Sheriff Larry Sherertz. “Safety belts and child safety seats are the law and we will enforce the law.”
Operation ABC Mobilization is a nationwide program to boost occupant restraint use and reduce crash-related injuries. More than 120 Virginia state and local law enforcement agencies are participating through Virginia’s Smart, Safe and Sober Partnership.
“Buckle Up Now” means zero tolerance. “Zero tolerance means if we stop you and you’re in violation of the safety restraint law, you will receive a ticket,” Sheriff Sherertz said, “No exceptions and no excuses.”
