house I rented, a couple dozen starlings hatched out in the chimney and, as fledglings, made their way down it and out into my house.
They emerged one at a time, so when I was there, I could at least escort them out. When I wasn’t, they decorated the newly painted walls with the cherries they had gorged themselves on from the nearby trees and excreted in rather pretty bursts of purple. The owner of the house had cleverly painted the walls with flat white paint, so cleaning up the mess completely was impossible. I tried to think of it as an avant garde painting technique and learned to live with it.
The next house was the Snakeling House. When I was moving in, in August, I noticed what I thought was a worm on the floor only to discover it was a hatchling northern ringneck snake. I picked it up and put it in the nearby woods, thinking it
