Gov. Mark Warner (D) is stepping up the pitch for his embattled tax overhaul by releasing a “how it affects you” analysis of his plan currently being put through the wringer in the Republican-dominated General Assembly.

Warner, a Democrat, proposes raising sales tax by a penny, reducing the tax on food by a penny-and-a-half, resuming the GOP-led repeal of the “car tax” and reforming the age deduction for seniors.

Here’s a glimpse at Warner’s plan for Rappahannock County residents based on 3,179 tax returns filed in 2001:

• Sales tax (non-food) to 5.5 percent means annually

Income of $40,000 equals $150 increase

Income of $60,000 equals $192 increase

Income of $80,000 equals $234 increase

• Sales tax (food) down to 3 percent means annually

Income of $40,000 equals $73 savings

Income of $60,000 equals $84
