more or stouter fences and race up and down mountains and still end up the winner. Riders with speedy mounts might opt for the more straightforward route to make up time in between fences, which cannot be altered during the race.
Culpeper’s Joe Kincheloe, who knows how to walk a course and plan a route, has dominated this event for the past decade as well. His longtime old fashioned champion, Garth of Birmingham, who died two years ago, wasn’t even a Thoroughbred — he was an appendix Quarter Horse. But he had the qualities that win these types of races — he was a bold jumper over any obstacle, and he was handy and sure-footed at speed up and down mountains.
