Many will argue the “luck” angle, saying Read forgot to weigh only because of the odd alignment, of stars caused by the BTO award. But, hey, the gelding finished first in his race, an important distinction when considering young horses and their developing mindset: Sur La Tfete doesn’t “know” he lost the race (in the end), and he’s gone on to become the nation’s leading novice hurdler in 2003. Justification is easy: the BTO prize acted as good luck in Sur La Tfete’s case, giving him a win, yet the disqualification allowed him to “regain” his maiden status for “03, meaning easier company and a milder learning curve for the young horse.
A circular argument, certainly, but easy to rationalize.
In the next race, Honor Me Always won the BTO award for the 'Ibm Voss stable, then was fairly tailed off for third place in the competitive event. Bad luck strikes again? No. Just consider the top-rated company (winner Hendler went on to win several races on the *03 circuit)
