train to Jersey City, N.J., arriving on May 21, 1918. They went from there by ferry up the Hudson, passing New York City. At that point they were loaded on a massive ocean liner, the S. S. Leviathan.
On May 30, 1918 they arrived in France. By July 23, 1918 they had their first exposure to the “front.” According to the record, Brown Stocton Smith was wounded in the first Meuse-Argonne assault, sometime between September 26 and October 10, 1918. Frank Smith was killed at Sommauthe, France on the night of November 6, 1918. He was killed while advancing against the retreating German forces. A few hours later the 318th was relieved and held in reserve, not to fight any more in this war.
Stockton Smith is “GeiTy” Woodard’s (of the Amissville Post Office) great uncle. Frank Smith is Danny Hitt’s great uncle. By the way, Sommauthe, France in 1918 was about the same size as Viewtown today.
