although refusals and falls are not penalized, they tend to slow the pair down. Occasionally a pair unknowingly travelling too fast is slowed down by a fall or refusal — and wins. Most contestants walk the course beforehand — walking being the best (and only) way to learn the course.
Fast time hunter pacing is just that — the fastest time wins.
For most of the divisions in the hunter paces, riders must belong to a hunt and horses must be fairly hunted. But open divisions are also offered, and these have gotten popular with show and trail riders who do not belong to a hunt, or hunt members with horses that have not been hunted. Hill topper entries also don’t have to be hunt members to participate.
