Yet many superstitious trainers feel like they’ve “left their winning in the paddock” if judged Best Turned Out beforehand. There’s no more “luck” in the well to draw on during the race itself, they wail. It’s bad luck to win.
No matter that good grooming shows from the inside out; never mind that the facts and figures do not correlate and that plenty of Best Turned Out horses go on to win — or place well in — their ensuing races. Doesn’t matter. There’s no arguing with a trainer wearing his lucky socks.
