Major tracks can run jump races at the time of their choice, as irrigated turf courses make racing a given even in summer.
Though jump racing at major tracks is strictly over hurdles (a “national” design of a 52inch high simulated brush padded at the base with a greencovered foam roll,) and most races at hunt meets is conducted over hurdles, timber racing is king at the point-to-point meets.
'limber fences, as the name implies, are made of wood — post and rail or board fencing. The hurdle is designed for speed; horses “skip” through the soft brush as an extension of a stride.
Timber racing, on the other hand, requires a horse with jumping skill and talent to clear an often airy fence with precision, as the solid boards have little give.
Though far less numerous, timber racing stands out as king of American steeplechasing. The best known U.S. races worldwide are, without doubt, the four-mile Maryland Hunt Cup and the four-mile Virginia Gold Cup.
But just remember, like Nuke said, it is a simple game. The first one in is the winner.
