Donna Johnson, president of the Virginia Agribusiness Council that represents 40,000 people in farming and horticulture, said having farm status can not only reduce farm vehicle costs but in some counties can mean fees are lower.
Watkins’ proposal would allow farm vehicles having a gross weight of 7,500 pounds or more to have a fee equal to onehalf of the fee per one thousand pounds of gross weight private carriers have to pay and one half the fee for overload permits unless the fee would be less than $15.
“It has its responsibilities too,” Watkins said. “The owner has to be doing a farm function. He can’t be driving his personal car to Florida.”
