Fredericksburg artists Jane T. Woodworth and Elsie Cooper Hagenlocker are packing up their canvases and taking their art to Little Washington.
The title of the show “In Transit” is based on the travels that inspired many of the works, which will be on display at the Packing Shed Gallery, March 4 through March 29. An artist’s reception is on Sunday, March 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Both of these established Fredericksburg artists paint with a contemporary vision, influenced by past travels as far as Italy and as near as King George, and find inspiration in these varied landscapes. But to call either of them a landscape painter in the conventional sense would be inaccurate. Theirs is a contented landscape, an aesthetic reconciliation of the joy and refuge found in nature.
Where Woodworth’s work is abstract and nonrepresentational with more of an aesthetic or intellectual response to elements of nature, Hagenlocker’s paintings are abstracted from recognizable images of urban landscapes and their city walls, recalling a moment of quiet reflection and solitude.
Woodworth and Hagenlocker are sharing the spotlight in this two person show, where one can see their outstanding color-driven work.
