For the daring foxhunter with a good jumping horse — one that perhaps lacks the speed to compete in the regular point-to-point divisions — three hunts offer oldfashioned races which form the Ruhsam Challenge Series. An old-fashioned is similar to the earliest steeplechase races, where foxhunters selected their own routes racing across country using a landmark such as a church steeple as the finish line.
Tbday's old-fashioned races use three or four beacons planted at varying points at the host farm to form a course of about three or four miles. Riders start and finish at the same point, but they can go in any direction and take any route so long as they pass all the beacons, manned by outriders.
