Thoroughbred racing should feel flattered daily, as many of the unique phrases from the world of horses have been folded into the American lexicon.
Particularly interesting this election year are terms snitched from racing for use in another sort of race:
* Start from scratch: Before the mechanical starting gate was invented, the st trter of a horse race would scratch a line across a dirt track with his boot. Political candidates sometimes start their campaign from “scratch:” from the ground level.
* Fast out of the gate: An obvious follow-up to the phrase above, a horse (or candidate, or business, or idea) that is fast out
