On yearlings

Once a foal is weaned — on the Taylor Made plan, taking one mare at a time from a larger turn-out group — Taylor said that there is a period of freedom for young horses.

“Between weaning and the start of (sales) yearling preparation, their only task is to grow into strong, healthy horses.”

For the most part, nature and good pastures are a horseman’s best tool to help achieve this. Other than extreme wet or windy weather, young horses should stay outside around the clock.
