Already, Thylor said, young horses are learning to stand, pose and move off sharply at a brisk walk when led.

“Once we’re starting to prep for the yearling sales,” a minimum of 80 to 100 days before the sale, “they need to be fit mentally, physically and cosmetically.

“We use a variety of methods at Taylor Made,” Taylor noted. “Hand-walking, of course, and teaching hand signals like ‘whoa’ are very important. But we also use round pen training and the Equisizer free-walker, to build condition and fitness.”

Summer sales yearlings are brought up early in the morning and turned out at sunset, to avoid sun-bleaching of the coat, but also “because they eat all their meals in the stall, you can adjust the amount fed to maintain precise weights,” Taylor said,

“Sleep is also very important to the young horses’ growth. Quiet time inside is a better place for quality sleep.”
