The “extreme” sport of racing over fences returns this month and continues through May with one or two meets each weekend. And although the races take center stage in the hunt country, there’s actually an entire other “circuit” — one in which the average rider, with an average horse, can compete.

Pony racing has long been part of tiie spring circuit. But in recent years, entries have fallen off, so the regular pony races are being replaced by pony field master chases this spring. “We’re trying to create horsemen for tiie future,” explained Graham Alcock, a former race rider who now acts as race starter. He expects the field master chases to attract more entries than pony races did.
