use the pony to do anything other than race.” In the new division, entrants follow a mounted field master at a hunting pace over a course of jumps and then check before being released to race to the finish.
“It’s a requirement that the kid must have hunted on that pony” Alcock explained. “They don’t have to own it, but they do have to have hunted it. Safety is our number one issue. And we want the kid to be able to ride the pony they hunt in these races, the pony that can go in the field master chase one weekend and in a horse show the next.”
The first junior field master chase will at Rappahannock on Feb. 28. Other meets that will hold junior chases include Piedmont March 20, Old Dominion April 3, Loudoun April 11 and at the Gold Cup May 1. The chases are part of the NAPPA series held around the countryside, which will hold its championships at Morven Park in Leesburg May 29.
