Running back Nick Compton, usually the Panthers main ground gainer, was targeted by the Yellow Jacket defense and held to 11 yards on 12 carries, with two fumbles.
“I don’t know if they did,” Compton said. “But I know I got smacked around a whole lot.”
In the fourth quarter, trailing 34-0, the Panthers finally got on the scoreboard to make a little school history.
After recovering a Yellow Jacket fumble, Panther quarterback Ethan Berry hit Paige Payne for 36 yards down the right sideline. Berry scrambled around the left side for 29 yards on the next play. After losing a yard on a handoff up the middle, Berry dropped back and hit Payne with a high pass into the right comer of the end zone.
“Berry’s quick on his feet and he plays his heart out,” Pullin said.
Payne, who scored the firstever touchdown in an RCHS home varsity game, echoed Berry’s sentiment.
